At its inaugural Supplier Awards, which were held at the London Transport Museum this month, Transport for London (TfL) named Siemens its Supplier of the Year.

Having originally received six nominations across a range of categories, Siemens was shortlisted for two awards: ‘Efficiency and Innovation’, for the company’s traffic signal Plug and Play solution, and ‘Best Scheme for Increasing Those Underrepresented in the Workplace’, for its pioneering work with TfL, Gingerbread and Women into Construction on the pilot Women into Transportation programme.

During the awards ceremony, the company was named winner in each of these categories, but the final ‘Supplier of the Year’ was a surprise award, presented by TfL at the end of the evening.

Speaking at the event, TfL Commissioner, Mike Brown said: “Siemens didn’t win this award for just one project or initiative, but for the quality and breadth of its work as a key supplier. Tellingly, the company was nominated across a number of categories, reflecting its commitment to Health and Safety, its collaboration with TfL’s staff network groups, its work on equality and inclusion and the quality of the projects it has delivered with TfL and for the people of London.

“Siemens worked closely with us to support women back into employment and to develop the potential of those already in the industry. The company also developed new operational practices when installing traffic signals, to increase efficiency and reduce the impact on customers, and has been a key part of our success in delivering a world-class service on the Victoria Line. As we continue to work with Siemens in a number of important ways, including installing equipment for the Elizabeth line, we look forward to further collaboration and even more innovation to ensure a world class level of performance for our customers.”

The Supplier Awards were held to recognise organisations in TfL’s supply chain for their efforts across a range of areas – from increasing opportunities for those under-represented in the workplace, to working to protect the environment. There were more than eighty submissions for the eight different categories, which were short-listed before the winners were announced at the awards ceremony.

Gordon Wakeford, Managing Director of Siemens Mobility Division UK, said: “We were delighted to have been nominated for six awards and then to go on and win two of them against some extremely stiff competition. To then be named TfL’s Supplier of the Year was a real honour and a proud moment for the business.

“It really is testament not only to the expertise, commitment and professionalism of everyone at Siemens, but also to the strength of our collaborative working relationship with Transport for London. We have a long and proud shared history and together have delivered some fantastic projects. To be recognised for our work in this way really is the ultimate accolade.”
